The Welfare State We're In

Working lone parents would lift 300,000 children out of officially defined poverty

James,

Off-topic, but any thoughts on the Baby P case? This article by Kids Company founder Camila Batmanghelidjh seems to suggest that even a state-run social services department manned by saints would succumb to institutional failings, letting down those in its care in the process (though she doesn't offer much in the way of practical remedies, other than that they "must be sorted out").

Is there a better way of addressing the widespread dysfunctionality of so many modern British families? The state is unlikely to succeed in putting back together the bits of society that it broke in the first place, but who else can?
