"Complete idleness even on an income demoralises"
The Beveridge Report, 1942.
Review
"A splendid book. It's a devastating critique of the welfare state. A page-turner, yet also extensively sourced. Demonstrates how attempts to achieve good intentions have led to horrible results -- increasing crime and violence, worsened conditions of the very poor, an extraordinary deterioration in the quality and character of British life.
Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winner.

The Greycoat Hospital
The Greycoat Hospital was once a workhouse. It has since been a hospital and a school. It has a very long welfare history. It has now been taken over by the state.

Private education in the third world
One of the many reservations I have about the Richard Curtis/Bob Geldof/Gordon Brown bandwagon to ‘make poverty history’ and have a million people pressurising the G8 is that they all, effectively, wish to bolster the state apparatus in African countries. … Continue reading
Bob Geldof”s attack on Ebay was illogical and excessive
Bob Geldof is becoming Britain’s moral conscience. Bishops, vicars and cardinals have vacated the pulpit from which morality was once preached and in has stepped the veteran pop singer. He is beginning to look the part, too. His long greying … Continue reading
