Snapshot of a public (ie state) middle school in San Francisco: when I was waiting in reception to see the headmaster, I heard the receptionist talking on a two way radio to somebody about an ‘escort’. Later I asked the head what it was all about. He explained that the previous head, who had rescued the school from its many troubles, had started a regime whereby any student who wanted to go to the toilet had to be escorted by an adult there and then escorted back (the escort did not go into the toilet).
When he had become head, the students had asked for this regime to be ended and for them to be trusted. He agreed to this. Very soon after the toilets were covered in graffiti and the floors splashed with urine. So he brought back the escort regime.
