Interview with ABC

I was given a remarkably sympathetic interview by Michael Duffy on ABC Radio National in Australia on Sunday night. I cannot imagine any part of the BBC giving me such a friendly hearing. It might be possible to hear the broadcast here. The interview with me starts after 21 minutes of the programme.

I heard your interview on ABC radio last night. It was very interesting.

I have listened to the broad/podcast and it is good that this gets an airing!

I am very much in favour of the thrust of the argument. I was astonished to hear that all the Education infrastructure began because at most 5% of the population were not being educated enough.

What I think was imporatant was the point about the Friendly Societies and the aspect of behaviour and visibility to cheating. Now, we have people with 'rights' and no obligations. Slowly we see in extreme cases people being denied council housing when they are becoming impossible to live near, but systemically there is little to stop people getting almost beyond help. What we need is the mechanisms that naturally stop people drifting away from an ideal citizenship.

We are very lucky in Australia to have Michael Duffy. He is the perfect example of what it means to be a "community minded anarchist" - not being afraid to break with all convention, "left" and "right", if in that conversation there is the potential to serves the real health of relationships between people in society.

This is the real "Third Way" of politics - seeing how institutionalisation and objectification of good intentions tends to allow them to atrophy over time. The best of luck to you Mr Bartholomew!

I heard the interview via podcast and I have ordered your book - looking forward to getting stuck into it!

Actually, the ABC (especially Radio National), like the BBC, is very left-biased. Michael Duffy's programme is the glaring exception.
